5 great places to check what’s new on the art scene

If you’re an art lover and planning on visit Porto you probably already have the Serralves Museum on your where-to-go list.

The city’s greatest museum hosts unmissable contemporary art exhibitions and you can also visit its incredible gardens. But where else to go if you want to see what’s happening on the local art scene? Here’s our list to help you find it out!

1. Culturgest – Porto
This cultural space has an exhibition program focused on contemporary art presenting national and international artists. It only hosts temporary exhibitions, so don’t forget to check their website to see what’s on! The building itself is worth a visit: built in 1931 to be a Bank, it still maintain it’s Art Déco interior and has a beautiful stained glass ceiling.

2. Maus Hábitos

Maus Hábitos is not the usual art gallery – it’s a mix of restaurant, bar, club, theater, concert hall, art ateliers, and gallery. Yes, that’s right! Everything located in a great spot with a beautiful city view. The place is devoted to everything that is new and artistic, so if you want to check some performance festival or a concert by a brand new band, this is the place to go.

3. Espaço Mira

Occupying the space of two deactivated warehouses, the Espaço Mira is a cultural space dedicated to photography and other art mediums related to it (video art, performance, among others). It also houses conferences, movie festivals, public talks and other events dedicated to reflect on art subjects. Take the subway to Campanhã station, walk a few meters and you’ll find this place that will definitely surprise you.

4. Ó Galeria

Ó! Galeria is a beautiful gallery located in the famous Miguel Bombarda art district, just a few steps away from the lively Cedofeita street. Go inside and get lost on the many amazing items they present, mainly illustration works, drawings, books, zines and other author pieces (like shirts and postcards for example). the gallery opened in 2009 and shows great work from graphic artists from all over the world.

5. Manifesto

Manifesto is a recently opened kiosk, located on Matosinhos’ city market, dedicated to promoting independent publications. It also houses a gallery that shows photography and a coffee stand. Take an afternoon to go there and immerse yourself in some great books, magazines, and zines. And if the weather is good you can always check out the beach afterward!
