Located 70km south of Porto, Aveiro is a beautiful city! It is popularly known as “the Venice of Portugal” due to its system of canals and boats similar to the Italian city. With less than 80,000 inhabitants, Aveiro is full of charm and has a lot to offer. Here are our tips on what to do and see there:
Our first suggestion is a classic! Go to the main square (Praça Humberto Delgado) and take a boat ride on the typicals Moliceiros. You will cross different channels of the Ria and get a glimpse of the Salines. The ride costs around 10€ and you get the chance to see the city from a different perspective. Don’t forget to take a lot of pictures!
Take a walk at the Art Nouveau Route, where you’ll be able to see around 10 buildings that are examples of this beautiful 20th-century style. You can also visit the Arte Nova Museum, located in one of the most emblematic Art Noveau buildings. Once there, go to their Tea House and relax a bit before continuing your journey.
After seeing the beauty and charm of the city, get ready for some delicious food! In Aveiro there are many options, but there are two things you cannot miss: the seafood and the egg cream pastry. Go to Mercado do Peixe for a good and fresh fish meal. For dessert, our suggestion is Confeitaria Peixinho, the oldest place in town to make the famous Ovos Moles! You have to try it!
From Porto you can take a train to Aveiro from São Bento or Campanhã stations, and the ride takes about 40 minutes. The tickets cost around 7€ both ways.
