The Douro Region is one of the most famous areas in Portugal! This wine area was demarcated in 1756 by the notorious Marquês de Pombal, and this demarcation (“Denominação de Origem Controlada” – DOC), means that all the wine produced there is under a high origin control. Even though the Port wine is the most famous product of the area, most vineyards (“quintas” in Portuguese) also produce table wine, referred as “Douro wines”.
This area is full of picturesque cities and villages. Pinhão is one of the most known among them! Famous for its views and gorgeous train station, the city is a good choice to stay while exploring the vineyards in the area. Quinta do Seixo
Located in the top of a hill, this Quinta has 108 acres and offers amazing views of the Douro River! Take a guided tour to learn all about the history of this amazing property – nowadays owned by Sogrape group. At the end of the tour, of course, join the wine tasting! Tour prices start at 10€ per person.
Quinta do Bonfim
Discover this amazing villa, grab your vine and enjoy the scenic view of the trains passing by near the river. Owned by the Symington family, this is one of the 27 quintas that they have in the Douro region and they only opened for visitors in 2015. Learn about the area in the guided tour and try Port and DOC wines on their terrace! Prices start at 12 €.
Quinta do Portal
This family-run company produces DOC Douro wines, premium Port and Moscatel and, in 2016, they receive the Best Wine of the Year, awarded by Wines of Portugal Challenge. And if you like architecture you can’t miss this place: Siza Vieira designed their buildings! Price starts at 7,50€.
