São Lázaro Garden was the first public garden in the city of Porto! Inaugurated in 1834, it is a romantic garden with lots of trees and flowers – special attention to the beautiful camellias. It is located near the Poveiros Square, the city public library and the Fine Arts Faculty, in a very lively area of Porto. It’s a nice place to relax during your walks in the city center!
Near São Lázaro Garden there’s a lot to see! Here are our suggestions:
If you’re hungry, head to Casa Guedes – a small tasca that is famous for its delicious pork sandwich with Queijo da Serra cheese! To drink, ask for a Espadal – a rosé sparkling wine that goes very well with the richness of the sandwich.
For dessert, head to Duas de Letra, a charming coffee shop where the art students use to gather. Take a seat on the interior garden and enjoy a nice cup of coffee! Also, check the art works spread around.
Don’t forget to visit the Nossa Senhora da Esperança Church, built in the 18th century and designed by Nicolau Nasoni. This talented Italian painter and architect also designed the famous Clérigos Church and Tower, Porto’s ex-libris!
São Lázaro Garden is open from 9am to 8pm and the entrance is free of charge. The closest subway station is Campo 24 de Agosto.
